Styles and Types of Floor Rugs
Just like anything else, floor rugs come from all over the world and in all flavors and sizes. The U.S. imports hundreds of millions of dollars in rugs into the states every year. Rugs come from a broad area including the U.S., China, Vietnam, Turkey, Iran, & India. People of all races, religions, countries and cultures take part in making these rugs for the world to enjoy.
Oriental Rugs are categorized by origin: Turkestan rugs, Chinese rugs, Tibetan rugs, Central Asian rugs, Persian rugs, Anatolian rugs, Kurdish rugs, and Caucasian rugs. There are several different types of rugs. Some include Hand Tufted rugs, Prodded rugs, Woven rugs, Needle Punch rugs, Rag rugs, Hooking rugs, and Braided rugs.
Hand Tufted rugs are made to withstand high traffic areas. It will take about 12-20 years of use to wear these out. They use high quality wool so the finished product looks like a Hand Knotted rug. Making a Hand Tufted rug takes a lot less time since they are created without knots. As a result, it takes less time to make this style of rug which not only makes them more affordable but an excellent type of do it yourself flooring.
Braided rugs are constructed using three or more pieces of fabric, usually wool, folding the raw edges to the middle and braiding them together. They can be constructed in a variety of different ways including, yam braid, flat braid, cloth braid, and banded braid construction.
Needle Punch rugs use yarn or strips of cloth and you use a punch tool from the back side. They are extremely durable floor rugs. Many call this technique “speed hooking” because it is very fast and provides almost instant gratification.
Prodded rugs are made by poking or prodding strips of material through linen from the back side. They are usually used for the not so glamorous uses because they hide dirt so well. Good for a wet room or “mud room”
Woven rugs can be handmade or machine made. They include pile rugs and flat rugs like carpet.
Rag Rugs are made using odd pieces of fabric on the back of an old sack.
Hooking rugs are made by pulling loops of fabric through burlap, linen, or monks cloth. They are pulled through using a crochet type hook.
With all these different types of area rugs, there is a lot to choose from. Some styles have more history behind the method than others but whatever you choose should make a great accent to your home.
