Picking Out The Right Size Floor Rugs For Your Home

There is a right way and wrong way to accentuate a home with a rug. Floor rugs that are the wrong size for a room can throw off the proportions of the room. Choosing the right size rug can go a long way in helping you put that final touch on your favorite space. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right size rug for your space.

All on, or off?

Choose a size of rug that you can fit all of your furniture on. You want to be able to accommodate all the legs of your furniture including coffee table and side chairs. If you can’t, then choose a floor rug thats a little smaller so that you can put your furniture on the perimeter of the accent rug. This way your rug won’t look two small or two big.

Dining rooms should also conform to these rules. Both the dining table and chairs should sit completely on your accent rug. If not, it will look very awkward and make it hard to pull your chairs in and out. The chairs should still be able to stay within the boundaries of the rug even after they have been pulled out to sit in.

18″ to Breathe

You want to leave some space between the wall and your rug. In a larger room a good rule of thumb is about 18″ between your rug and the wall. In a smaller room or entry way 10-12″ will do just fine. This will give your area rug more breathing room and allow it to define your space.

High Traffic Areas

Family and guests can be really prone to tripping on your area rugs if they are not placed correctly. In high traffic areas, cover the entire area or don’t cover it at all. Don’t leave an opportunity for an accident. And as we know, everyone will catch that corner of the rug.

Irregular Rooms

Choosing any type of interior furnishings can be tough for irregularly shaped rooms. Choosing a rug can be even harder. If you have a funny shaped room that your just not sure about, try a round rug. Round rugs have an interesting way of defining a space with looking like you were trying really hard. Sometimes, they are even a great conversation piece.

Measure twice, cut once

Just kidding! There is no cutting here but there will be some measuring. If you are completely unsure how a rug might define your room, measure it out. If you already know the size of a rug you want, measure it out and use painters tape to define the shape of the rug on the floor. This is a great way to visualize how a rug will fit in your room. If you don’t have one picked out, measure your space and then go shop for a rug that will fit your space.
