A Shag Rug Adds Warmth And Style To Any Room

While most people tend to think of a shag rug as being a white, fluffy rug, perfect for placing at the side of the bed and delightful to step onto on a cold morning, there are actually many different types of shag rugs. They can be made from wool, cotton, acrylic or even leather and they come in a variety of styles, colors and patterns. The variety makes it very easy to place these comfortable floor rugs anywhere around your home. Gone are the days when a shag rug was only associated with the 70′s. What once was considered retro and dated, shag rugs are now appearing in some of the most sought after interior designs in the world. Shag has grown up and is now making its way back into our lives.

A typical cream or white shag rug can be made with either wool or cotton. Often used in bedroom settings, they will match well with any furniture in a room. Cotton rugs are easier to clean than those made from wool; therefore they are often the better choice for a child or teenager’s bedroom, or any bedroom that gets a lot of use. Wool rugs, on the other hand, are often much softer and extremely durable. Shag wool area rugs are becoming one of the most popular rugs on the market today. So, even for well trafficked bedrooms, a colored wool rug would also be a perfect choice.

A very special type of wool rug is the Flokati shag. Originally handmade in Greece, these rugs are first hand woven. Once the rug is completed it is placed in friction baths connected to waterfalls under the Pindos Mountains where it is left for up to 40 hours at a time. This process causes the pile on the rug to fluff out till you have an extremely luxuriant and soft rug. The fluffy pile is what makes this area rug stand out and it exudes some exotic flair. There are many different styles of Flokati shag area rugs which are available in many different colors and patterns. You can also choose from a variety of pile heights.

A shag area rug, usually quite a bit larger in area than the smaller bedroom type, is great to place on living room floors. They add both comfort and warmth to the room and as they are found in a variety of different styles and colors can easily match existing furnishings and décor. If you are looking for something to match well with a wooden floor, a brown shag rug is usually a great choice. Using a color of brown that is a few shades lighter or darker than your hardwood floors is a great way to have your new shag area rug stand out and make a statement, even if the color is conservative. Usually, for living areas, you would choose rugs that do not easily show the dirt thus often creams, off-whites, browns and grays are a popular color choice for living areas. These more common shades of color are a great fit in most households.

For something different, a leather shag rug will bring a contemporary look to a room. Leather, however, is not the easiest to care for. Leather shags cannot be laundered but must be dry-cleaned; therefore leather rugs are usually better placed in areas where there is not a lot of traffic. Featured rooms or areas in your home are a prime place for leather rugs. These area’s usually don’t get the normal day to day traffic which is what you want when you incorporate these styles into your decor. They are perfect, though, for adding a touch of class to any room and as with leather furniture match with just about any furniture.
